Sourcing top talent and contractor payroll for a growing biotech
We partnered with Alumis, a clinical-stage biotech focusd on precision immunology, to provide scalable contractor payroll and recruitment support as the company rapidly grew from 50 to 240 employees, enabling them to efficiently build high-performing teams across clinical and corporate functions while advancing multiple global Phase 3 programs.
Challenge
We began working with Alumis in September 2022, when they were approximately 50 employees. As they scaled to roughly 240 employees, they needed a reliable partner to manage payrolling for a fast-growing contractor workforce – particularly as they advanced multiple global clinical programs across psoriasis, lupus, and MS.
They lacked internal talent infrastructure (with just one HR contractor at the time), required high-volume staffing for three global Phase 3 studies, and were actively building teams across G&A, Clinical Operations, Clinical Development, Regulatory, and Quality.

Approach
Our approach involved:
- Providing a payroll solution that allowed Alumis to onboard pre-identified contractors efficiently and cost-effectively
- Offering consistent, high-touch communication with every department lead
- Advising on contractor structures, compliance, incentives, and workforce planning
- Screening for both technical fit and culture fit, aligning with Alumis’ strong emphasis on values, humility, and a “no-ego” culture
This early trust with HR and department heads positioned us as the primary point of contact across the organization.
As a result, our solution looked like:
- Running payroll for a large contractor population (approx. 40 contractors placed through us, plus additional payroll workers)
- Supporting all functional areas – G&A, Clinical Ops, Clinical Development, Regulatory, and Quality
- Acting as an embedded partner – providing compliance guidance, contractor incentive recommendations, and flexible hiring solutions across the business
We also became fully integrated into the team, continuing to support the new Head of Talent and maintaining strong trust across leadership.

Results
- 100 placements since 2023
- Strong cultural alignment in hiring contributed to successful team integration
- Recognized internally as a trusted partner, regularly invited to talent offsites and treated as an extension of their team
Additional impact in contract hiring
Beyond payroll, Alumis also relies on us for ongoing contract recruitment, building a contractor base that supports their workload.
